The Realities of Persecution

It is estimated that over 360 million Christians experience severe persecution and discrimination globally.

Responding with Love: Faith Amid Persecution

“We have endured relentless persecution. A 17-year-old in our community, who courageously accepted Christ, was stoned to death after worship. For years, other rocks have rained down on our tin roof during services. We face many concerns. Yet, our church has become a place of unimaginable grace.

There is an unthinkable crisis in our area from the war. Recently we distributed much food in response to people that included those who had hurled stones. I stood outside, marveling, “For years these people threw rocks at us; today we take revenge with love.” That day, many gave their lives to Christ.

Even though we had been helping so much, in June, the church was attacked. There was a lot of destruction, and 5 leaders, including myself, were beaten and jailed for “bringing in a different religion.” Yet, even in jail, our faith deepened. When we were released, the church erupted in celebration and worship.

Someone asked me, “How do you endure this?” My response is this is normal for us. Do not feel sorry—instead pray we have faith and strength to always take revenge in love.”

A Light to Community

In many parts of the world churches gather in the face of adversity. From physical violence to psychological pressure, legal discrimination, and social exclusion, being a Christian can cost you your job, your family, your home and your safety.

Millions of Christians practice their faith in secret to avoid these repercussions, holding steadfast despite the risks. Many of the communities WorldServe is active in see high levels of discrimination and persecution toward Christians.

Even now, over the last year, Christians are being displaced due to military offensives, places of worship repurposed or destroyed by ruling leadership, and even imprisoned because of their faith.

And yet, local churches still stand as a light to their communities.

Despite these realities, the churches you partner with serve those around them by offering shelter, food, education, Bibles, and fostering long term efforts to lift the community out of their current struggles.

Truly, we say to each of these churches, “You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)
